Public record: Criminal conviction on record

What the public record shows

Karl Sebastian Greenwood co-founded OneCoin with Ruja Ignatova — “the Cryptoqueen.” He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in September 2023 to 20 years in prison for one of the largest crypto frauds ever. OneCoin took in more than $4 billion from millions of victims worldwide. This is a criminal conviction — not an allegation.

The scheme

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York:

  • Launched in Bulgaria in 2014, OneCoin was marketed as the next Bitcoin — a “Bitcoin killer” and “financial revolution.”
  • In reality OneCoin had no blockchain and no real value — it was conceived as a fraud from day one. The “price” was simply set by the company.
  • It spread through a multi-level-marketing (MLM) network that paid commissions to members for recruiting new buyers — a pyramid structure. Greenwood, the global master distributor, took 5% of all sales — over $300 million.
  • Ignatova vanished in 2017 and is a wanted international fugitive.

Why we rate this 1 / 10 — Avoid

A guilty plea and a 20-year sentence in a multibillion-dollar fraud that combined the two most dangerous ingredients in retail investing: crypto hype and MLM recruitment.

Red flags this case teaches

  • “Crypto” sold through recruiting — where you earn by signing up others — is a pyramid, not an investment.
  • A coin with no public blockchain you can independently inspect isn’t a cryptocurrency; it’s a database the promoter controls.
  • “Get in early on the next Bitcoin” urgency is a manipulation tactic.

Bottom line

Convicted and serving 20 years. If a “cryptocurrency” pays you to recruit and has no real, verifiable blockchain, it’s a pyramid scheme wearing a crypto costume.
